May 15, 2017, 11:36:29 AM. I was asked to help try to sort out an air con fault on one of the extended family's cars recently- a Mk5 Golf GTi. The air con had apparently recently stopped working, and a quick check of the system revealed that there was zero gas in it so obviously a leak somewhere.
Remove the engine cover, disconnect the battery. Remove the air intake assembly by uncliping the section of pipe at the top of the engine like so. this will enable access to the bits you need to do. Then undo the timing belt cover by unclipping 3 clips, 2 of them just behind the fuel line pipes and one at the back of the engine.
If it will turn then try checking the relevant fuse, etc. or take out the fans and open up the small one to see if one of the carbon brushes has stuck open. If so, free off, clean, reassemble and see if that helps. If the small fan isn't turning then the system can't cool the refrigerant which leads to no cool air. Hope this helps.
Mine was alright for years until a stone went throuigh the condensor. Most likely it's got a leak. The easiest check to do would be to put 12 volts directly onto the air con compressor clutch,if it pulls in and blows out cold air then it's fairly likely it's the HP/LP switch that knackered.
